Over the last year we have been working with HATCH to develop an art project telling people’s cycling stories in Bradford, as part of the Bradford 2025 City of Culture. These culminate in an exhibition and a series of drop-in Workshops from Wed 10th to Sun 14th of September at The Beacon venue in Lister Park.
THE EXHIBITION IS OPEN 12:30-4PM SATURDAY AND 10-4pm on SUNDAY. (With drop-in weekend activities workshops running 2-4pm)

Led by local sound artist, David Carpenter, (A Sense Of Place, The Argent Grub) . Check out the audio here for inspiration!
Collage Badge Making
Make your own bike-themed badge that tells a story. This workshop will provide you with everything you need to wear your love of cycling with pride.

Found Word Poetry
Love bikes and a bit of creativity? Come along to a fun, relaxed workshop where we’ll play with bike related words to create short, one-of-a-kind poems that celebrate cycling. No poetry experience needed – just bring your imagination and your love of life on two wheels. It’s all about having fun with words, sharing stories, and seeing where the ride takes us!
Led by local artist Nicola Storr
Paint Bike
Pedal powered painting bike – produce a centrifugal spin art masterpiece – pedal or squeeze the paint!
Dr Bike
Capital of Cycling will be providing free minor bike repairs and safety checks as well as information and advice on cycling in Bradford. Bring a bike along and if we can’t fix it, we can at least advise you on what to do with it.
Background to the Project
We are working with 3 groups: Parkside ladies cycling group in West Bowling; Keighley Youth Focus and The Sandale Trust in Buttershaw. The groups have each chosen an artist to work with to produce artwork which will be displayed in Bradford city centre during 2025. Their stories include ladies who are enjoying learning to cycle, having never had the opportunity when they were younger; a group of volunteers who are using cycling to regenerate their local park, which has often suffered from vandalism and antisocial behaviour; and older people who are recalling cycling stories of their youth.
So far, the groups have been getting to know each other and experimenting with different art mediums and techniques including clay, photography, painting, printing and collage. In December, the groups got together to share their experiences so far and to plan the next phase of the project. We can’t wait to see their art work. We’d also like to thank Give Bradford for supporting this project, which we are hoping will be the pilot project for a bigger, regular celebration of cycling in Bradford. Watch this space…
