We’re hoping to re-start a bike gifting project for asylum seekers and refugees soon. We did some major gifting work in 2017 thanks to the generosity of the Margaret Carey Foundation and a small grant from Cycling UK. The need has not gone away and we hope to do the same in 2020.
Asylum seekers in Bradford often have very little in terms of possessions and money and so a bike can be an absolute life-saver in terms of getting about – and getting to know Bradford.
We also want to give bikes to local folks in need as well, so this isn’t just limited to particular groups.
You can donate via our Fundraiser Page on Facebook or via PayPal using the link at the bottom of the page. You can also volunteer to help us with this project.
It costs us between £30 and £60 to give away a bike. Bikes are often donated but they need new parts, and we need to dedicate time to fixing them, safety check them and so on. We also like to provide a lock with the bikes so they can be kept securely. And we also like to offer some training in basic maintenance and bike handling where possible so that the bike continues to be ridden.
We can do a certain amount with volunteers – and there are a small group of dedicated people who give a huge amount of time to help us. However – there are always overheads (heating, rent, volunteer expenses like bus fares etc.). That’s why we’re asking for your help to support this fantastic project.
