On Yer Bike Cycling Stories

Over the past few months we have been working with HATCH projects to develop an art project telling people’s cycling stories in Bradford to link into Bradford 2025 City of Culture.

We are working with 3 groups: Parkside ladies cycling group in West Bowling; Keighley Youth Focus and The Sandale Trust in Buttershaw. The groups have each chosen an artist to work with to produce artwork which will be displayed in Bradford city centre next year. Their stories include ladies who are enjoying learning to cycle, having never had the opportunity when they were younger; a group of volunteers who are using cycling to regenerate their local park, which has often suffered from vandalism and antisocial behaviour; and older people who are recalling cycling stories of their youth.

So far, the groups have been getting to know each other and experimenting with different art mediums and techniques including clay, photography, painting, printing and collage. Earlier in December, the groups got together to share their experiences so far and to plan the next phase of the project. We can’t wait to see their art work next year. We’d also like to thank Give Bradford for supporting this project, which we are hoping will be the pilot project for a bigger, regular celebration of cycling in Bradford. Watch this space…
